The Secretary of the Navy takes pleasure in presenting the
MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION
to
USS HANCOCK (CVA-19)
AND
ATTACK CARRIER AIR WING TWENTY-ONE (CVW-5)
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For meritorious achievement while participating in combat operations in Southeast Asia, from 20 January to 14 July 1967, As a member of the "Yankee Station" forces, HANCOCK contributed significantly to the combat mission of the United States SEVENTH Fleet by conducting numerous successful missions against heavily-defended enemy military and logistic installations and lines of communications. Through their continuous display of professionalism, determination, and resourcefulness, the officers and men of the HANCOCK, and her embarked air wing, supported their veteran ship in pace with newer attack aircraft carriers, making a major contribution toward the achievement of United States objectives in Southeast Asia. HANCOCK's performance throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
