Ken Groom, former Hancock Shipmate and HANCOCK Plank Owner - Second Commissioning - has contributed much to our Oral History Section as well as his own Middle Years Gallery which we invite you to visit. He has captured some interesting images of Hancock's Early Days..

This Gallery within our Oral History Section is dedicated to the U.S.S. YANCEY (AKA-93) and his shipmates and therefore these stories are basically from his First Navy assignment aboard the Yancey, a Fleet Cargo ship Hull number 93.

You can see some images of the good Ship Yancey by visiting Ken's Personal Navy Gallery in our Public Galleries. The Window will load extraneously.. so close that window when you are finished to return to this Gallery.

We're very grateful to Ken for contributing these interesting and often funny stories of his tour aboard the YANCEY as any Sailor can readily relate to them.

Most of the Stories are Personal glimpses into Navy Shipboard life, and don't really have much bearing on the Ship they sailed in. These stores will warm some inner place inside anyone who has 'gone down to the sea in ships' -

I, your Yeoman, can particularly relate to Ken's stories because he, too was a Yeoman and understands that we must be more observant than the average Sailor, because we are the ones whose duty it was (and is for current Yeoman), to document the Ship's daily routine.

So we (Ken Groom and myself) hope you enjoy these stories.

Remember they are Copyrighted and therefore, if you wish to use any of them, please seek permission from Ken or myself before you go ahead and copy them. I'm sure he'd appreciate it that you felt his stories worthy of your use, but do the right thing and ask permission. That holds true for any Oral History provided by those contributors to this Website. The Yeoman thanks you for keeping this trust.
