You are looking at a photo of the Yancey's Captain's Gig(boat).

The Captain's Gig is a small craft which ships carry with them and is used to carry the Captain (CO) of Ships to ports of call or between other ships.

This is Yancey's Captain's Gig. You see it here resting(impaled) on an outcropping in the middle of the bay in Sasebo, Japan.

In a brief conversation with the Captain's Coxswain, Doyle Meadows; told me (Ken Groom) that even though he was the official coxswain, another sailor was the relief coxswain at the time.

Knowing that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, the coxswain decided to take a short cut straight to the ship. This move isn't always the wisest move as the photo proves.

This was during a low tide which exposed this small outcropping of rocks. The rest is evident by seeing the photo.

I understand that they waited until the next high tide and was able to get the gig off of the rocks.

There may be more to this story if we can corner the appropriate Sailor for his slant on the incident.
